Friday, January 12 - Informal Session 6-8 p.m.
Friday, June 15 - Informal Session 6-8 p.m.

Activities

The Yampa Valley Ceili Society (YVCS) teaches traditional Irish ceili (kay-lee) dances to anybody and  everybody who enjoys dancing and having fun. We put special emphasis on music, and so our society also includes talented musicians who provide traditiona. live music for our dancing and enjoyment. Absolutely no dance experience required!

Informal sessions
. We meet about once a month to learn ceili dances. During each two hour session, we'll teach and then dance several traditional ceilis, with a combination of live and pre-recorded traditional Celtic music. These are incredibly fun sessions, and we really encourage you to attend! They're a little less formal than our public ceilis -- definitely a "come as you are" good time!

Public ceilis.
We hold public ceilis several times a year, typically at The Depot. We invite the public to attend these events; which are a combination of group ceili dances in which anyone can join, performed dances by members of our Society as well as step dancers, and live music.

Special note to musicians: If you enjoy traditional music (e.g. you could envision enjoying playing music for dancers in a collaborative environment), please let us know! We are looking for “folks” interested in playing Irish music in the folk tradition. Contact our lead musician, Gary Burman, at 871-7977 or garyburman@frii.com, for further information.

What is Ceili Dancing, Anyway?

(Borrowed from the Twin Cities (TC) Ceili Society's website. Why reinvent the wheel?)

Ceili dancing is Irish social dancing. It is very much like an Irish square dance or like Contra dancing, except with more complex footwork: there are a few basic steps in ceili dancing, and each dance combines these steps in different ways with a caller and Irish music. This is the sort of dancing you may have seen in the movie The Titanic. Many dances involve a partner, or are in groups of three or four. Some dances are in a large circle, some in lines with couples facing, some in groups of three or four.

Do I need a partner?
No. Although many of the dances involve a partner, there is no need to bring one.

Do I need to know the steps first?
No. All ceili dances have a brief instructional period at the beginning for newcomers to learn the basic footwork. Newcomers are welcome, and you do not need to have any prior experience to have a great time.

What about kids?
This is definitely family entertainment and well-supervised children are welcome, although child care is not provided. Children about eight or nine (your mileage may vary) should be able to follow the dances and seem to have a lot of fun.

What should I wear? What should I bring?

Shoes:
Many ceili events are on a dance floor that needs to be protected from grime and damp. Please bring clean shoes to change into when you reach the dance. Athletic shoes are a fine way to start (NO BLACK SOLES), or any shoes that are reasonably flexible and do not have too much tread. Special dancing shoes are not necessary.

Clothing:
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Ceili dancing is very aerobic and ceili dancers are by-and-large not fashion plates. There. I said it.

Water:
You'll be glad you brought a bottle of water. You may even find yourself searching for a way to refill it.
