Last week Apple provided further direction to its developer community regarding the implementation of location-based ads in apps destined for its App Store. The LBS apps must "provide beneficial information,” and will not be accepted if they use "location-based information primarily to enable mobile advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on a user’s location." Why is Apple stirring this pot at this time? Our editors weigh in.

This video animation created by Exosphere3d stunningly portrays the flight path of US Airways 1549 that landed in the Hudson River last January. The company used satellite imagery, geospatial data and 3D models of the US Airways Airbus plus audio from tower communications to graphically re-enact the incident labeled "Miracle on the Hudson." The series of animations was published in the Huffington Post.

Building a crash location database should be simple: locate the events on a map. That part is simple, but not as accurate and complete as it could be. To increase the usefulness of California's statewide crash data a team added pre-processing and cleaning, an offset tool and a new statewide mile marker database to the mix. The outcome? An overall geocoding match rate of 91% and a clean database to serve "clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in the fields of traffic safety and public health."
