The Coalition of Geospatial Organizations (COGO) sent a letter to Congressional leaders last week requesting establishment of subcommittee oversight of geospatial in the House and Senate. Why make such a request and why now? Our editors look at the request, the timing and what the future may hold.

Oversight (#1)

Congressional oversight and greater budget control will freeze geospatial investments across the Federal government for years while oversight tries to figure out what to do, and in the end will sharply reduce total spending since they will "eliminate overlaps"

True, this may be an effort to "save" taxpayer money, but in reality it will result in crippled services.

Federal budgets are segmented, competitive, antagonistic, and in the end duplicative only in the broadest sense...in practice they are tightly coupled to specific programs, end-user requirements, and legal mandates. Trying to standardize geospatial applications across the Federal community is, quite frankly, both impossible and impractical.

I cannot understand why a commercial industrial advocacy group would desire such an outcome.
