Are you in a "fit" or "fat" city?

Do you live in "fit" or "fat" city? Literally! As the new year unfolds, are you finding "folds" in other places? Generally, January is a time for exercise and diet advertising galore! I had to take note this week of Men's Fitness Magazine's list of the cities in the U.S.ranked by their "healthiness," health-related amenities, or lack thereof.Both cultural and physical geography traits were considered in the methodology used to rank each city.Factors such as access to fitness centers, air and water quality, climate, geography, number of parks and open spaces, and the dreaded "fat factor" considered as the city's habituation to "junk food" were all "weighted" accordingly to arrive at each city's composite score.[Perhaps you have also heard of the Surgeon General's report on obesity in the U.S.and how a large percentage of the population is grossly overweight.]

However, the magazine did not take the obesity rating far enough and should have considered sales from quick services restaurants (QSR) on a per household level in order to get to the "pound for pound" propensity to acquire the burgers, fries, and soda.See our "Map of the Week" for a view of the nation's fast food frontiers.
