Directions has been discussing MapPoint with people throughout the mapping industry. Most of the people who have reacted so far believe that Microsoft's entry will threaten some products but will expand the base of mapping customers. Here are some observations from the people involved:

John Cassidy, national accounts manager at Geographic Data Technology, comments that MapPoint is a welcome addition to the industry because it will make more people aware of mapping, but its entry will not be a quiet one.Geographic Data Technology supplied data for Microsoft's MapPoint and for Expedia and Streets Plus.

This market was heretofore occupied by product such as MapLinx, Scan US, BusinessMap. Microsoft will become the proverbial 800 pound gorilla in that arena.

MapPoint will probably be a closed system. It will do what it does, and no more.People will look for something else if they want to do more.We don't think this will cannibalize open systems.

It will help make everybody more aware of mapping.
