James Robinson, a founder at OpenSignalMaps, tapped data collected by that organization’s Android app that captures information on wireless carrier cell towers and signals and public wireless access points. Over the past years the organization has built a database of about 75 million geolocated SSIDs, the 32 character names you can give your wireless access point. Scouring them, he found 1140 occurrences of Obama (with various capitalizations) and just six that include Romney. The Obama-including names were coded by sentiment on a map of the world (blue = like, red = dislike, yellow = neutral).
But what does this all mean? This is hardly an unbiased survey. Still Robinson wanted to dig out as much information as possible and clipped the data by country, comparing positives to negatives. In the U.S., the positives has 6% edge (N=756). Outside the U.S. feelings were even more positive, some countries were 100% positive. Interestingly, no country had a negative skew, though some had no data.
