Stephan Winter

Stephan Winter is Senior Lecturer at The University of Melbourne, Australia. His current research focuses on spatial information theory, spatial cognition and spatial communication. Before he worked on a model of raster-vector-unification and formal specifications for interoperability. Parts of his research results were included in the OpenGIS specifications. He participated in several research projects on interoperability, before he won European and national research projects in the area of navigation and tourist information. Currently he leads a project on access to spatial data. His publication record notes more than 80 publications over the last 9 years, 25 of them full paper reviewed. The courses he teaches deal with spatial data management and analysis, web- and mobile mapping and location-based services. Previously he held positions at the University of Bonn, Germany (PhD in 1997), and the Technical University Vienna, Austria (Habilitation in 2001). Dr. Winter is co-chair of the ISPRS WG II/6: Geo-spatiotemporal semantics and interoperability, and chaired of the Working Group in Interoperability in the Association of GI Laboratories in Europe. He chaired also the EuroConference on Ontology and Epistemology for Spatial Data Standards in France, 2000, and organized several workshops.
