Job Description

CIESIN, a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University based in Palisades, NY, has an opening for a GIS Developer/Analyst to support interdisciplinary studies of human-environment interactions using geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies. The position is focused on developing, analyzing, and mapping information in order to investigate regional and global development indicators, protect biodiversity and to promote research on natural hazards.

Duties include creation and management of online interactive mapping systems; creation, maintenance and integration of large spatial and non-spatial data sets; writing scripts and programs to automate routine tasks; developing quality control methods, and documenting workflows and procedures. The position also requires an ability to conduct basic spatial and statistical analysis on collections of development indicators aggregated at the sub-national level and to create innovative methods for the visualization of these data.

Job Requirements

B.S. or B.A. or professional degree and at least four years experience/ M.S. or M.A. plus two years work experience Degrees should be in Geography or Computer Science, or other related field emphasizing knowledge of spatial analysis techniques germane to CIESIN’s ongoing and planned activities. Advanced degree preferred. Preferred skills include:
-Demonstrated ability to build and maintain mapping services meeting OGC . standards.
-Two + years experience with ESRI ArcServer, ArcIMS, ArcSDE, ArcObjects programming, & ArcInfo GRID.
-Two + years with web technologies - Java, JavaScript, XML; Databases: Access, SQL Server and/or Oracle.
-Competence in statistical analysis packages such as SPSS, SAS, or STATA.
-Experience in implementing FGDC and ISO metadata standards.
-Familiarity with global development issues.
