General Information

Job Statement

   My last employer was Runnymede Borough Council, United Kingdom. My official duties in the council included spatial analysis and modeling using ArcGIS along with the use of databases and spreadsheets, to produce results in the form of maps, tables and statistics. In my last project I constructed spatial models using tools in ArcMap in order to determine, review and forecast capacity of infrastructure facilities. This was the first attempt of its kind in the GIS history of the council. The facilities considered included educational institutions, green infrastructure, health facilities, social care facilities, utilities, transport etc. I have prepared Impact Assessment maps for the Environmental section of the Council. My work often required manipulation of data in MSAccess and MSExcel before using them in ArcGIS. My routine duties also included creation, editing and maintenance of spatial data in the Borough for use by all Council staff, and presentation of public data on the internet using ArcMap and ArcIMS. Apart from this, I have assisted in the implementation and development of the corporate geographical information system and the preparation and maintenance of the corporate gazetteer.

   In my earlier post as Sr.Engineer at WAPCOS, I have carried out flood modeling, reservoir sedimentation studies and water availability studies as part of hydrological analysis for engineering projects. I have prepared several feasibility and project reports for hydrological studies.

   The study of M.Sc.(Applied GIS) at Kingston University helped me in developing skills like planning and analysis using ArcInfo & MapInfo, use of cartography techniques with ArcInfo and analysis of satellite remotely sensed images using ERDAS Imagine. I began working as a GIS Technician at Runnymede Borough Council while pursuing the aforesaid post-graduate course.

     My main subjects at Kingston University were Spatial Information Analysis, Visualisation & Image Processing, Remote Sensing, GIS & Hazards, Land Information Systems and Contemporary Issues in GIS. I secured an average of 70% marks in these modules.  I also secured the ‘Ordnance Survey award for Best M.Sc. Thesis’. The thesis involved a study of the scope of ArcGIS in conjunction with statistical methods to predict earthquakes. The methodology included a combination of statistical and geostatistical analysis.

‘Remote Sensing’ helped me acquire know-how of classifying land-use and identifying different types of vegetation using satellite imagery for assessing changes over time. ‘Spatial Information Analysis’ included an environmental task of locating landfill sites given a set of constraints, and presenting the result in the form of maps, tables and a report. This was useful in building up analytical skills in a real-world scenario and its formal presentation. ‘GIS and Hazards’ provided hands-on experience in using GIS for hazard mapping and modeling, in pre-event, event and post-event scenarios. Since input data used was real-world data available on the web, the module provided exposure to actual hazard situations. The study of ‘Land Information Systems’ introduced me to NLPG, BS7666 and GIS practices in local government. The study of Contemporary issues in GIS included a topic on Crime Analysis in local government establishments.

I have been successful in applying my knowledge in these areas at my place of work.

   My IT Skills include ArcGIS, ArcIMS,  MapInfo, ERDAS Imagine, SQL, HTML, MSOffice, and AutoCAD. I have undertaken several online training programmes including ArcIMS and ArcSDE, provided by ESRI.

   My last post often involved team work, and included exchange of knowledge and information between other GIS colleagues. The work also required me to prioritise tasks set by colleagues from other sections and to meet deadlines. By interacting with my internal customers in other departments, I have been able to produce results according to their requirements. The feedback from my colleagues regarding my work has always been positive. However the work was also mostly self-directed, requiring proactive tasks and decision making.
