The Alabama Museum of Natural History.on the University of Alabama campus and UA’s geography department have partnered to plan and design a Discovery Learning Lab. Funding come from part of $1.2 million in grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The students will have informal access to iPads, laptops and other technology and software including GIS. College students and other volunteers will serve as “geek mentors,” teaching the students how to use the different software programs. The hope is the tech will get integrated into other museum programs including summer fieldwork projects.
After implementing Geospatial Technologies ( GST) course on a pilot basis in a few schools effective from the academic session 2010-11, Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) is now planning to expand the reach of the course across the country from the session 2013-14.
The National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) Research Committee is pleased to announce the 2013 call for proposals for the E. Willard and Ruby S. Miller Geography Education Research Grants. Bigfork High School [MT] students enrolled in Hans Bodenhamer’s Geographical Information Systems class will recieve dual credit with Flathead Valley Community College starting next week.
High school staff become adjunct faculty and students get high school and free college credit from the course. It's the second GIS course in a series and matches the college course "Projects in GIS." The students do have to pass the college "compass placement test" to earn credits.
