Winners of Singapore’s Spatial Challenge Awards and other GIS Contest News

Thirty three teams from 18 schools enterred the contest sponsored by the Singapore Land Authority and Esri. The winners are listed (but not what they built) but the most interesting news is from the Ministry of Education.

SLA and the Ministry of Education (MOE) are exploring the development of a web-based application for A-level Geography students. SLA is also formulating a Geospatial Competency Framework in consultation with academic, industry and public agency partners.” said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Law Sim Ann.

Google has a contest for geo developers:

How would you make your community or local government run better? In our first Google Places API Developer Challenge, we’re inviting developers around the world to make something that improves their communities or governments by using the Google Places API and its database of places and tools. The developers of the winning applications will receive a VIP experience at Google I/O 2013.

There are datasets to get you started. Submissions open Aug 15 and are due Oct 15.

Pitney Bowes Inc. today announced the launch of the Pitney Bowes Entrepreneurial Competition, an innovation-focused contest targeting startup and entrepreneurial organizations. The Company also announced its participation in the sponsorship program conducted by the Stamford Innovation Center, which provides startup-centric programs to accelerate entrepreneurial efforts.

The Pitney Bowes Entrepreneurial Competition is designed to identify and drive the development of growth businesses that can leverage three of the Company’s technology areas: Spectrum® Spatial analytics and location intelligence; the secure evidencing platform; and the Connect+® web-enabled digital envelope and mail printing system.

Winners get a year of office space in Stamford, access to PB services and more. Ends Sept 7.

Seattle, King County and Washington State are teaming up to offer more than $75,000 in prize money for development of apps that use government data and stimulate economic development throughout the state. State support comes from the Washington State Broadband Office which is a program of the state Department of Commerce. The challenge officially opens today and is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in Washington State.

The contest closes Sept 6.
