China Mandates Swapping out other GNSS for Beidou in Commercial Vehicles

Thursday, January 17th 2013
By Adena Schutzberg

Now that Beidou, China's own GNSS, is mature and field tests of its use in commercial vehicles is complete, officials are requiring certain livery vehicles to remove existing GNSS devices that tap into the U.S. GPS or other constellations and use Beidou exclusively. The change is required at the next update of the GNSS. These vehicles are already required to have GNSS; the change is simply to which constellation they "listen."

The new law covers Jiangsu, Anhui, Hebei, Shaanxi, Shandong, Hunan and Guizhou provinces, along with Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Tianjin Municipality. Those were the areas in the testing last year that included more than 100,000 vehicles. All passenger buses and vehicles used for transporting “dangerous articles” must make the change at update time. Trucks and trailers require a retrofit.

The goal is 80% use of Beidou by this March in these vehicles. New vehicles will get the Beidou GNSS at the factory.
