CHAT is Here and other Government GIS News

By Adena Schutzberg

The Western Governors’ Wildlife Council is creating the Western Wildlife Crucial Habitat Assessment Tool (CHAT) for public release in December, 2013. The CHAT aims to bring greater certainty and predictability to planning efforts by establishing a common starting point for discussing the intersection of development and wildlife. CHAT will be an easily accessible online system of maps displaying crucial wildlife habitat and corridors across the West.

While not intended for project-level approval, CHAT is designed to reduce conflicts and surprises while ensuring wildlife values are better incorporated into land use decision-making, as well as large-scale conservation projects.
It launched Dec 12. I found no information on the tech but Applied Geographic was involved and shared: "cached tiles+PostGIS/GeoServer+Google JS API & basemap."

The City of Sacremento, CA has opened up its data via a portal.
Maria MacGunigal, the city’s chief information officer, said the website at has three main components: Organizing and standardizing data; creating a typical interface for developing applications using the data; and providing a visual way to understand the data, such as with charts and graphs.
Visualizations on Google Maps built on Junar, an open data platform (never heard of that).
Australia's Bureau of Meteorology offers data downloads in geodatabase format (or shapefiles, by special request) but offers OGC web services (WMS, WFS). Interesting.
