Oahu’s Public Beach Access and other Government GIS News

The State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Office of Planning have worked collaboratively with the City and County of Honolulu and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Fisheries to review and update information defining Oahu’s public access [to beaches].

Here's the map. I'm learning the giant +/- with no slider is a sign of ArcGIS.com underneath any map.

Because of the obvious value of GIS information, Lancaster County [PA] commissioners on Wednesday agreed to pay $61,209 to update the county's features as documented from the air.

But, some things never change. A comment in the local paper reads:

Relying on data that hasn't been updated since '98 and '05? There's real progress and money well spent.

How many new homes and business have been built since then?

Google Maps is free. And current.

BOSTON – Monday, December 17, 2012 – The Patrick-Murray Administration and the City of Boston today launched the kickoff of the Commonwealth Connect smart phone application -developed originally for use in the City of Boston by Mayor Menino’s Office of New Urban Mechanics. The expanded App allows residents to report quality of life problems, such as graffiti and potholes, directly to the appropriate local government for resolution. Secretary of Administration and Finance Jay Gonzalez joined local officials at City Hall to announce details about this new application, available to thirty-five participating municipalities.

In short, a Boston program has now expanded not statewide, but to 35 municipalities. No press release from SeeClickFix, nor the city nor the Commonwealth. I heard about it via Tim O'Reilly.
