Geoportal.gov Lives!

Wednesday, November 14th 2012
By Adena Schutzberg

I did notice that geoportal.gov did not come up once during Hurrican Sandy. And, perhaps here's why: work began on it earlier this fiscal year, per Jerry Johnston, CIO of EPA speaking at GeoINT in October. What work? The development of " cost-reimbursable cloud services."

Among the distinguishing features of this new platform:

The shared platform will be different from past efforts to centrally collect geospatial data in that some data will gain status as an authoritative source.

The platform will also give agencies an option to procure cloud-based services for common geospatial system-related functions, including identity management...

What's ahead?

Within the next 6 months, the program office – Interior is the managing agency for the project – will create virtual spaces for permanent geospatial communities of interest, he added.
