Thanks to grants from The ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ®) and PetSmart Charities®, The Southeast Florida Spay/Neuter Coalition is receiving much-needed funding for costs associated with 4,600 targeted spay and neuter surgeries in an effort to reduce shelter intake and euthanasia of dogs and cats.
The key word here is targeted. Research and GIS analsyis determined that the highest number of dogs surrendered to shelters in Miami came from an area in Unincorporated Miami-Dade County near the Crossroads. Cats surrendered to shelters were highest in an area of Hollywood. The spay/neuter efforts will focus on these communities to encourage residents to have their pets sterilized, vaccinated and micro-chipped. The goal is reduce the number of unwanted animals born and help the pets in homes live longer healthier lives.
I will add that if you apply for a grant and ask for funds for such a project in general and are competing with a group that has a targeted geographic aimed at having the most impact, I'd give the funds to the second group.
I hope the groups will keep accurate records to see if this targeted approach works and can be replicated.
