Latest to Use GIS to Get the Public Involved: FBI

Tuesday, January 15th 2013
By Adena Schutzberg

The Federal Bureau of Investigation now hosts a map of unidentified bank robbery suspects. It uses geotagged security camera photos of bank robbery suspects and includes their nicknames for easier searching. While articles I read called the map a "Google Map" in fact it uses OpenLayers and you can choose between Google base maps and OpenStreetMap.

In the context of recent mapping efforts, the FBI made a statement arguing the map helps protect local residents from gun violence. There's supposed to be a way for citizens to provide tips via the map/interface but I could not find it.
