New Wyoming Coal and Wind “Map” and other Government GIS News

Thursday, June 21st 2012
By Adena Schutzberg

A complex new digital map with more than 100 switchable layers comprehensively showing coal and wind energy resources for southwest Wyoming is now available to the public. A second part detailing oil, gas, oil shale, uranium and solar resource information along with the infrastructure available for its harvest is currently in progress.

The map, released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS), was developed as a component of the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI).It compiles coal — including coal-bed methane — and wind resources data in southwestern Wyoming.  It also adds maps and information on electrical energy sources in southwestern Wyoming to previously published maps of oil and gas development for the entire state

I can't seem to find the map onine. I see "plates" and "pdfs" but no "switchable layers."

GIS is working for the local dog association in Chelmsford, MA.

Surrounding the property on one side is a big hill and on the other are houses. Using GIS mapping the software has enabled the Dog Association to draw out where the park and parking will be, the amount of fencing, the location of the big and the little dog areas, pinpointing where amenities and trees will go and a shed for storing maintenance gear.

“We haven’t been able to map it out and see what it is, we’d like to keep it no less than two acres, but the area they’re looking at is bigger than that because they need an area for parking,” said Merrill.

We are having a heat wave here in the northeast US. Rutgers University offers a map of current temps across that state as part of the Weather and Climate Network.
