Wednesday, January 2nd 2013
By Adena Schutzberg

Researchers from the social networks IT security group at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, in Isreal, home of Waze, can help prevent traffic accidents. They studied a month's worth of data from the four million users of the app in that country. The used Google Earth to analyze the data and found:

  • 75% of locations prone to traffic accidents were intersections
  • police need an average of 20 minutes to reach the scene of an accident, sometimes up to 40 minutes

So, how wll waze and other apps prevent accidents? The will help local governments identify dangerous intersections and better locate police officers.

There is no indication of who funded the study. Per other studies half of Israeli drivers use waze; 72% of all drivers that use navigation apps use the service.
