Esri Launches its Own Propriety Compressed LiDAR Format: .zlas

A new compressed LiDAR data format, .zlas is detailed in an update to Esri's ArcGIS documentation posted in late December. Esri apparently mentioned LiDAR compression at its Mapping and LiDAR Forum, co-located with the User Conference, last July. Esri's format is called .zlas.

Martin Isenburg, of rapidlasso, the folks behind LASzip an open source tool to create LASZip compressed LiDar data (an open format, pdf) , collected some speculation about the format.
