Researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln had been using drones to gather news from hard to reach places for x months. Last Thursday the FAA told them to stop until they received authorization.
UMissouri is planning to pursue authorization per a post at the program site. The school thought it could use the drones as amatuers, but the FAA sees the school as a public operator, per a July 10 letter to the school. The school had produced a few stories using the drones, but only 10 students were registered for the course in their use planned for this fall. It may or may not be offered.
A blog post at the University of Nebraska Drone Journalism Lab states that school also plans to head indoors. But, the Lab is going further and hosting the Drone Journalism Conference in Lincoln, Neb. on Oct. 24, 25 and 26.
