On April 1, the National Archives released data from the 1930 census. [Don’t try going to the National Archive site directly or you are bound to get lost looking for the information. For best results, start here.] Many of the experts interviewed about the data find it a fascinating profile of the United States, just months after the stock market crash of 1929. The opening of this archive of data is primarily for genealogical purposes, so do not expect to find the types of data that you would in today’s censuses. However, the University of Virginia’ Library system is an excellent place for basic data from 1930 or other census years. An ABC News story about the census covered some of the nuances of census taking such as asking the respondents if “a radio was present in their home.” The National Archives in Washington D.C. will allow viewing of the records by appointment. Other regional offices may be less crowed. Visit here for more information.
