Overview
CensusTrax (www.censustrax.com) is a patent pending web GIS system that combines Google maps with a Flash Interface, an Open Source MySQL spatial-relational database, the US Census and a variety of xml-based web services. The system seamlessly overlays dynamically-served translucent, interactive Flash vector-based demographic maps on top of a Google Map. The overlaying “intelligent” Flash-based vector maps can perform thematic analysis, be clicked-on for information retrieval, display mouseover tooltips and query a spatial-relational database.
Combining a Google base map with vector-based web GIS is significant because each provides a “missing piece” to a comprehensive Nation-wide web GIS system. The Google base map provides seamless, accurate National coverage with panning and zooming and National address location/geocoding. The vector-based Flash GIS, in turn, provides a true GIS that connects to a spatial-relational database and performs dynamic spatial analysis, including thematic analysis for any location down to the block level. Finally, CensusTrax is sold on a turn-key basis, thus enabling full customization of both database and interface. A turn-key model also promotes cost-savings by combining development costs and software license into one fee.
The system was co-developed by Urban Explorer (www.theurbanexplorer.com) and Geographs Corporation (www.geographs.com).
