Product Description:
The British Deer Society (BDS) West Branch approached bVisual ltd in
early 2003 with a desire to use MapPoint more efficiently for the mapping
of deer sightings. They had tried MapPoint previously, along with
a commercial add-in, but realised that more customisation was required
if it was to be used universally for the sightings of deer. They
also noted that their needs for mapping deer sightings must be similar
to other societies, or perhaps for analysing the sighting of different
types of flaura and fauna.
BDS often have the need to plot the sightings of different types of
deer at different periods. This is sometimes done over several days
at a country show, where the automatic visualisation on a mapping interface
will provide ease of understanding of groupings and trends.
bVisual thus created a MapPoint based product, pinXplorer, that extends
the functionality and interface of MapPoint to provide:
-
Automatic creation of multiple custom-defined datasets in a two level hierarchy
-
Explorer view of all the recordsets
-
Easy to use drag’n’drop of pushpins from the explorer to the maps
-
Simple import and export of pushpins to Excel, including Lat\Lon and GB
Ordnance Survey grid references
-
Change balloon and name display of a group simultaneously
-
Change highlight display of any group simultaneously
-
Search pushpin notes effectively
pinXplorer is an application that enhances MapPoint to provide an interface
that makes the plotting of the location of items of Types easy. pinXplorer
adds the dimension of time by using Periods.
-
pinXplorer allows upto 8 types to be used. The default is type of
deer, but this can be changed for any other type information.
-
pinXplorer allows upto 9 periods to be used. The default periods
are named after their appearance, but they too can be changed.
-
In fact, any Type or Period name can be changed by renaming it in the explorers,
and the effect is immediately seen in MapPoint.
-
MapPoint pushpins can have a balloon showing name and\or note, and any
pushpin in MapPoint can be highlighted with a thick yellow surround.
pinXplorer provides the ability to add or remove balloons and highlight
by the selected dataset or group. In addition, pinXplorer enables
a string to be found in the notes of a pushpin. If a match is found,
then the highlighting of the pushpin is reversed.
Data can be imported from correctly formatted Excel spreadsheets, or
from MapPoint files, and the data can be exported to Excel, via the spreadsheet,
or saved as a MapPoint file. The ability to import and export means
that data can be easily passed around in order that it can be merged and
analysed easily.
pinXplorer turns MapPoint into an effective 2-dimensional data plotting
and analysis tool.
pinXplorer use the MapPoint ActiveX control, can be bought with a MapPoint
2004 license.
