The Nebraska State Records Board has awarded $250,000 in grants to Hitchcock County and 11 other governmental entities for development of projects to improve online access, according to Secretary of State John Gale, board chairperson.

Most of the grants were awarded for geographic information system -- GIS -- projects, which are designed to store, analyze, manage and present all types of geographically referenced data.

The GIS grants included $23,742 to Hitchcock County and similar amounts to 10 other counties.

The public can now access an online digital map that shows more than 12,000 miles of North Carolina’s estuarine shoreline.

The North Carolina Division of Coastal Management and East Carolina University worked together to create the detailed map of estuarines, which are transition areas where freshwater and saltwater mix. The map identifies shoreline types, such as marshes or swamp forests, and structures, such as piers and bulkheads, along estuarine waterways.

The new maps and older ones seem to be built on ArcIMS.
