Citymaps: From Retail Store Mapping to Social Mapping

We wrote about Citymaps last December and identified its unique focus on commercial businesses. The "logo maps" made the app look and feel quite unique. Now, a new iOS app boasts features that make it more of a Google Maps competitor.

The new CityMaps iOS app (iTunes link) features:

  • vector-based maps (OSM)
  • details of more than 15 million businesses in the U.S
  • emphasis on social features (create and share maps of the best places to go)
  • driving, walking, and public transit directions (source? unknown)
  • bubbles on the map reflect businesses social media activity
  • oblique views

Next up: Android app (eight weeks away), browser-based version and worldwide coverage.

Somehow app builders have yet to create the killer social mapping app. With $5 million in venture funding, the business model is not yet clear to me  focusses on advertising per AdWeek:
Advertisers are featured in users' discovery streams, and such brands' pages can pull in their marketing posts from Instagram, Facebook and other social channels. The ad units combine location, search and personalization elements that make them like a marriage of Facebook and Foursquare's promos.
