Consolidated Edison has provided a $30,000 grant to the College of Staten Island. In addition to allowing underserved high school students working/studying alongside CSI students, the grant will include GIS experience. "Subsequently, field exercises will allow students to take their own series of measurements and observations. After completion of field and ship-based activities, students will go to the CSI Geographic Information System (GIS) laboratory where they will record their findings and results."
A Ph.D. Candidate in spatial science at USC, Elisabeth Sedano, has developed a Website that tracks and maps the visual eyesores in hopes of creating LA's first database of billboard locations. The project uses crowdsourcing to capture the data.
James Page, CEO of James W. Sewall Company headquartered in Old Town, is among the candidates to replace the current president of U Maine. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Maine at Fort Kent and has taught there even as he's lead the geospatial firm. Other candidates have more extensive administration experience, so he's not a shoe in by any means.
