A Woman in GIS Awarded
The ADVANCE Rising Tide Center recognized one of three employees for significant achievements as a female scientist at The University of Maine.
Dr. Kate Beard-Tisdale, School of Computing and Information Science, was recognized on April 10 in the Coe Room of the Memorial Union for her expertise in Geographic Information Science (GIS). Beard-Tisdale gave a one-hour presentation, “A Passage In Time,” about the effective usage of spatial and temporal information for human consumption and analysis.
Jodi Heitkamp and Philip Young: “NIU geovisual mapping laboratory”
The Geovisual Mapping Laboratory has had a major impact on NIU students and the surrounding communities based upon the variety of projects produced within the lab. The lab has procured site licenses for two of the major GIS software companies (ESRI & Intergraph), and was designated one of seven Centers of Excellence in Mapping, in the United States. Most importantly, the GML provides pedagogy for student involvement, including internships and assistantships.
Distribution of Crime at LSU
Data collected by The Daily Reveille shows six months of different types of crimes are evenly distributed throughout the campus, with the exception of assaults. Most assaults occur near on-campus residences as students return to their residence halls or on-campus apartments late at night.
The good news: officials are looking at ways to lessen crime and increase safety. The map is built on Tableau.

On March 22nd, GoGeomatics Toronto hosted an event where a group of passionate and interested students assembled to explore the main issues affecting their future in the Canadian geomatics sector. They documented their input and presented it to the Canadian Geomatics Community Round Table (CGCRT) the group behind the Pan-Canadian Geomatics Draft Strategy.
Job for the Future
Approximately 130 high school students visited Muscatine Community College on Thursday for the Junior Achievement High School Agriculture and Advanced Manufacturing Careers Expo.
Among the careers noted: GIS.
Brian Ritter, director of the Nahant Marsh and an MCC instructor, gave a presentation on career opportunities in conservation, such as people working in the field of geographic information systems (GIS). “Every major city hires GIS people. It’s an important growing position in conservation,” said Ritter.
Cartographer to "Let them have it" at Conference
[Dave] Imus will be in Portland next weekend as keynote speaker at the 2014 GIS In Action conference at Portland State University's Smith Hall (April 16-17). Imus says the expected 250 mapmakers in attendance make [sic] not like what they hear.
"I'm going to let them have it,'' he said, giving an example. "National Geographic is the primary cartographic company in the country and its map of the United States does not say a thing. It's a geographic abomination.''

Huxley College of the Environment is hiring six students to work on a summer project to make the interactive campus map more detailed and useful.
UK Geography Students Visit Santa Cruz
University of Liverpool professor John Boyle's geography field class has brought 25 students to the city [of Santa Cruz] for two weeks to research topics ranging from the nutrient levels of Watsonville's Pinto Lake to local attitudes toward genetically modified foods.
Students study physical and human topics and hone their research skills.
Clark to Receive Environmental Foundation Funding
The Clark University Graduate School of Geography has been selected to join a prestigious group of institutions that receive funding from the Edna Bailey Sussman Foundationfor U.S.-based environmental science Ph.D. student research.
It's the only geography department in the group.
GITA Mid-Atlantic Chapter - EnerGIS 2014 Geography / GIS Scholarship
Students are invited to propose a short presentation (max five minutes) for the event scheduled for Sept 2014 in Canonsburg, PA. Two recipients receive $500 (but don't apparently have to attend or do anything further) and one receives $1000 but has to present. Applicants apparently need to be in college, share their major and overall GPA and provide references. I don't see any other requirements in the pdf (such as residence in the region or membership in the chapter).
Harvard Runs out of ArcGIS Online Credits!
Your institution is not alone if you are having a hard time managing your ArcGIS Online credits. Here's what happened at Harvard last month, along with a suggested solution.
The GIS community at Harvard had collectively consumed all allowed credits from Esri on our organizational ArcGIS Online and Business Analyst Online accounts, causing them to be suspended on March 24th. As of March 28th, Esri has donated 20,000 credits to Harvard and reactivated the accounts. CGA encourages all users to use desktop solutions for large number geocoding tasks in order to reduce our credit consumption rate.

Minnesota Eying Partnership with North Dakota for Development of Drone Industry
With ambitions to develop a drone technology cluster, dozens of representatives from agriculture, aviation and higher education are meeting Tuesday in Thief River Falls with government authorities including Sen. Al Franken and Rep. Collin Peterson to talk about ways to collaborate and promote the region as a center for the unmanned aircraft industry.
It's interesting to watch the areas that were not chosen as test centers partner with those who were.

Teaching Context and Scale via Landmark Imagery

We've seen them in pictures and in guidebooks. The world's most famous landmarks live in popular imagination in their idealized form, but it can be surprising to see them in person. While some landmarks can be even more awe-inspiring when you take in their natural surroundings, others have been swallowed up by sprawling cityscapes.
In our perfection-obsessed society, it's tempting to crop out distractions and focus on the main subject. But as these images show, it can be just as enlightening to see how a landmark fits into an environment, and how a tourist attraction sticks out from a natural landscape. 2014 University of Minnesota Summer Polar Geospatial Boot Camp
The Polar Geospatial Center and U-Spatial at the University of Minnesota are pleased to announce the 2014 University of Minnesota Summer Polar Boot Camp, a collaborative, 10-day geospatial workshop held from July 21st to August 1st on the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota.
The Summer Polar Boot Camp is divided into two weeks, and participants have the option to attend one or both weeks. Week one will cover desktop and web GIS, cartography, remote sensing, GPS, and LiDAR. Emphasis will be on foundational skills in gathering, creating, managing, analyzing, and communicating spatial data. The second week of the workshop will focus on geospatial topics and techniques as they relate to commercial imagery and the polar regions. A full summary of topics can be found in the 2014 Schedule above.
This a very reasonably-priced workship; the fee for the course is just $100. Proficiency with GIS is required.
Open Source Geospatial Research and Education Symposium
The Open Source Geospatial Research and Education Symbosium will be held in Finland June 10-13. Early bird registration has been extended to April 30.
