Protecting ND from Unwanted Pesticides
Pesticide applicators can now use Global Information System (GIS) [sic] maps from North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) to locate sensitive application areas, such as certified organic acreage, beeyards and vineyards.
“NDDA is the only state agency maintaining these maps,” said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “Putting the service under one roof ended some duplication and ensures that information on the maps is current.”
Sounds like other states should start creating such maps.
Hurricane Warning Maps
The National Hurricane Center's Potential Storm Surge Flood Map, which will be available at www.hurricanes.gov within 60 minutes of the issuance of a hurricane warning, will display just where flooding from the hurricane could occur and how deep the water could be in various locations.
It'll be a static map, but there's a plan to overlay it on Google Maps to make it more useful for navigation.
Frozen Pipes in Winnipeg
A CBC analysis of more than 190,000 Winnipeg addresses shows exactly where properties are in most danger of developing frozen pipes. Up until now the city offered a list of properties at risk, but this is the first time a map has been offered. I'm not sure why the CBC and not the city has produced it. It's Google Maps based.
NOLA Crime Heatmap
"A lot of the crime maps are just really bad from a visualization standpoint," [software programmer Ben] Eckel said in a phone interview. "Not a lot of thought goes in to how they display data."
The idea is to get away from dots and categories of other crime mapping sites. It's based on Google tech and heroku, a cloud app development platform.

High School Grad GIS Interns Wanted
City of Perryville [MO] Public Works Director Mark Brown announced last week that Perryville Public Works is looking for two summer interns to help verify and update the City’s GIS mapping system and complete related tasks for the city’s building department.
A GIS (Geographic Information System) app containing interactive digital maps and satellite imagery that allow users to access population figures and information on buildings and establishments in Oman, with pinpoint geographical accuracy, has been launched by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) at the Comex 2014 exhibition in Muscat.
The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency did a first for a U.S. intelligence agency by opening an account on open source site GitHub earlier this month.
The NGA uploaded two related projects to the online repository and version tracking system in early April – one for geographic tasking system web app developed with the Django web framework, and the other a set of installer software for running the web app on a virtualized platform.
Fierce Government notes the code is under a permissive license and not a standard one either.
