Kaskaskia College Geotech Funding and other Education GIS News

Kaskaskia College, the oldest community college in Illinois, has received a $196,342 grant from the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education Program. Kaskaski will establish geospatial technology certificate and associate degree programs to serve the southern half of Illinois.

When Centreville High seniors Antonio Choi and Brooke Peterson presented their culminating, final-exam project, they did so at their school’s first-ever GIS (geographic information system) Fair. And Tish McKinstry, their Geospatial Analysis teacher, couldn’t have been prouder of them and their classmates.

In her specialized, upper-level science class, students learn skills they can use in virtually any career, while earning three college credits at JMU at the same time. And during this school year, Centreville had the highest enrollment — four course sections totaling more than 80 students — out of 18 Virginia high schools participating in the program.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett announced that the Department of Environmental Protection awarded $1.65 million in Mine Map Grants to seven recipients, including six of the state’s universities.

“These grants create an important partnership with higher education, develop a skilled workforce for the energy sector, and continue to ensure a safe working environment for Pennsylvania’s miners,” Corbett said.

The Mine Map Grant Program provides funding to learning institutions and incorporated nonprofit organizations to process mine maps and mine data into electronic formats that can be used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other computer applications. The grants will also provide funding for mine map and document restoration and preservation.

The grant-funded projects will georeference 7,200 maps, digitize 3,100 maps, scan 26,900 maps, and restore or preserve 259 maps.
