Students from more than 90 universities in 12 sub-Saharan African countries have come together for a two-week mapping exercise to put their university campuses and surrounding areas on Google Map.
More than 1000 students are participating.
Banning High School, in California, was among the schools represented at Esri UC. Now the local paper addresses student contribution to local policing.
And, thanks to some basic data entry and analysis at Banning High School’s geographic information systems classes, a couple of students were able to help police determine when a couple of chronic criminals would continue their work — and accurately predict where they might strike next.
The GIS mapping skills of sophomore Christian Preciado and senior Chadelaine Huertas landed their crime-mapping project at Redlands-based GIS software developer Esri’s User Conference in San Diego last July, which were featured among nearly 800 other projects.
The New York City Department of Education (DOE) received a Special Achievement in GIS award.
The DOE's Office of Pupil Transportation has been building ArcGIS into its enterprise architecture for managing all of its spatial data, such as bus stops and routes, used in different applications.
Also, the Office of Pupil Transportation has developed external web-based map applications, like a pre-K school bus contract bid portal, as well as internal applications, including one for determining transportation eligibility by calculating walking paths to schools.
