Tinley Park Joins a Local GIS Consortium and other Government GIS News

An actual comapany, MGP Inc.,  manages and staffs  GIS Consortium (GISC), a Chicago-area consortium of 18 communities that will share a GIS system and staff. Tinley Park is in as it figures to save quite a bit of money for its $303,000 initial investment.

St. Paul now has an interactive map of streetsweeping plans. Its built on OpenLayers (this is Minnesota!) but I find it odd the legend offers linear symbols and the ones on the map are areal. 


The Muncie-Delaware County (IN) Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting and awards dinner on October 27, 2011.

Delaware County GIS Director, Kyle Johnson, was the winner of the Chamber’s Excellence in Public Service Award. Johnson has substantially improved and added functionality for Delaware County’s GIS services. The Beacon website for property retrieval information has become an impressive resource for economic development, government and the general public. Johnson also provided custom maps and data for businesses and contractors working with government.

The Wyoming State Geological Society has released a new online app, including a map, for Yellowstone. The data is downloadable, too. I wonder if visitors know that IMS stands for Internet Map Service?

One of the first examples of a person using Google Earth to enhance their participation in the democratic process though occurred along the Santa Cruz County and Santa Clara County border, where a Google employee used the tool to analyze a controversial logging proposal.

The work, by a Google employee who lived in the area, took place in 2005 and involved Al Gore. I wonder if a regular citizen would have had access to the same people/tools?
