UK Schoolchildren Have Geography Challenges, Too

Among the findings of a Heathrow study (the airport commissioned the study, it did not take place at the airport) of 1,000 children between the ages of six and 10

  • 75% have been abroad
  • 41% did not know that the UK is in Europe
  • 24% don't know what an atlas is

Don't worry; Heathrow will fix it. The airport has placed globes in the terminals and will give out maps to young travellers just in time for the spring holidays.

Here are the details of the study from the press release:

(1) Heathrow used the independent online research company ResearchBods who surveyed 1,000 British children aged between six and ten from a nationally representative sample under parental supervision, between 02 and 07 February 2012. Children were asked to identify the location of countries by selecting a grid overlaid onto a world map. Its researches are members of the MRS, PRCA, BPC and Esomar, and abide by their guidelines. Further information is available at http://www.researchbods.com.
