Urban Airship Shutting Down SimpleGeo Services as of March

In a blog post titled "Update on our plan to integrate location and context services into our push messaging platform" the folks at Urban Airship explain their short term plan for SimpleGeo.  (APB covered the acqusition after it was announced in October.) The post explains, by citing a letter sent to SimpleGeo customers, that the goal of intergration must be done quickly. So, the newly blended team must focus.

In order to deliver on this aggressive vision in the shortest amount of time possible, we need to focus our product development efforts. So, after lots of internal discussion and customer conversations, we will wind down the availability of the current versions of Places, Context, and Storage over the next few months. We will do everything we can to minimize the impact to customers as we look to end the availability of these services on March 31, 2012. For more details on this change, see our FAQ document.

Factual, which has relationship with Urban Airship can insure continutiy of those using the Places service. There are migration options as well. As a "thank you" the company has forgiven past service fees and the services will be free to current users until they shut down. Current customers are also elegable for one of Urban Airship's services for free for up to six months.

I read this as meaning these types of services are never coming back to the Urban Airship menu.
