Image Gallery

Our Image Gallery is a resource for readers to see what others geospatial professionals have created. We encourage others to contribute images to the gallery so that all may benefit from the breadth of geospatial applications now being used in many industries. Please feel free to use the link “Post Image” to add your own satellite image or image map with as much information as necessary to explain your contribution.

Alien Head
October 08, 2003

Contest category: Unique Geomorphologic Images

Application areas: Environmental

Description: Once the registration of the 2002 Landsat 7 data was completed, land clearing assessment using statistical methods was undertaken to analyse the 2002 data against 11 previous mosaics across Australia dating back to 1972. When interpreting the land clearing events west of Sydney, 100km north of Canberra, an Alien like head emerged from the data which I considered to be a unique geomorphologic image.

NGIS Australia would like to thank the Australian Greenhouse office for permission to display this image.

World GeoCover-Ortho Mosaic
October 03, 2003

Contest category: Thematic Imagery

Application areas: Remote Sensing & Image Processing, Internet/Web Mapping/Web Services, Satellite Image Data

Description: Probably the world's largest single image file to date. This image is a mosaic of the entire circa 1990 GeoCover datasets from NASA & Earthsat. Details about the data can be found on the GeoCover web site http://www.geocover.com/gc_ortho/ … The 1990 set of data consists of about 600 seperate images, stored in UTM zones. We have reprojected and mosaiced this to geographic/latlong to produce a single image that is over 2 terrabytes uncompressed, 1.4 million pixels wide, half a million pixels high.

The image was compressed to Enhanced Compressed Wavelet (ECW) format to produce a 26GB file that can be served in realtime via Image Web Server.

Source of imagery:  Landat TM processed to balanced TM 742 by Earthsat & NASA

Commercial image processing software used:  ER Mapper to create the mosaic, Image Web Server to serve it

Image processing technique employed:  Georectification, Mosaicing, Compressing

Salt Lake Terrain
October 01, 2003

Contest category: Image Maps

Application areas: Real Estate, Cartography, Business GIS

Description: Salt Lake Valley Transportatino and Terrain.

To make this map, MicroDem was used to tile together 40 USGS 1:24,000 DEMs. Using MicroDEM again, a grey-scale relief map was created, and saved as a GeoTIFF image.

National Land Cover Data from the USGS was downloaded from the National Elevation Dataset web page as a GeoTIFF file.

The road, boundary and landmark data is from StreetSmart 4.0, from Meridian GeoSystems (http://www.meridiangeo.com).

MapInfo was used to display the raster and vector data. The Land Cover data was set at a 55% transparency, to allow the greyscale relief map to show through.

Geographic location:  Salt Lake City, Utah

Source of imagery:  Landsat
