Dear Reader,

In our Development area we explore the use of customizing tools such as scripting languages, embedded controls, and internet map server technologies. We assign ourselves projects, and carry them out in diary form in front of you. This is a place where developers can learn tricks and tips, and end-users can get a look "under the hood."

This week we launched a new Development project: we're going to see just what it takes to create a rudimentary internet map server. We're starting with Blue Marble's mapping OCX, GeoObjects. The main project page is at http://www.directionsmag.com/devel/goims.asp and the first log entry is at http://www.directionsmag.com/devel/goims.asp?EntryID=1. Let me hear your suggestions if you have a project you'd like to see us tackle.

We've extended the MapPoint 2000 contest through this Friday. If you haven't yet entered, you can still do so at http://www.directionsmag.com/contests.asp?id=15. Other ongoing contests include BusinessMap Pro and Corporate Edition, Spatial X components from Object/FX, and a copy of ADC WorldMap 2.0. Current contests can be found at http://www.directionsmag.com/contests.asp.

We hope you're enjoying this summer. Thanks for reading Directions Magazine, and be sure to tell a friend!

Regards,

Scott Elliott
