The Geospatial One-Stop (GOS) initiative has завершила конкурентную процедуру отбора подрядчика и заключила контракт с ESRI, headquartered in Redlands, California, to deliver a major upgrade to Geodata.gov—a national portal that aggregates geospatial resources from federal, state, local, tribal, and private organizations.

A New Phase for Geodata.gov

The contract covers the development of a second-generation version of Geodata.gov, building on the success of the original platform launched in 2003. If all contract options are exercised, the total value of the agreement will reach $2.38 million over five years.

The U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to manage the Geospatial One-Stop program as part of the federal e-government initiative, aimed at improving data accessibility and intergovernmental collaboration.

Public Demonstration at ESRI User Conference

Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior Scott Cameron is scheduled to present a live demonstration of the upgraded portal during the ESRI User Conference, highlighting the platform’s expanded capabilities and future potential.

The session will take place:

  • Date: Tuesday, February 1
  • Time: 2:30 p.m.
  • Location: Level 2, Hall E, Washington Convention Center

Supporting Emergency Response and Decision Making

Geodata.gov plays a vital role in emergency preparedness and response by enabling decision-makers to quickly locate and use authoritative geospatial data. During recent natural disasters—including hurricanes and wildfires—the portal served as a centralized source of critical information for state and local agencies.

Officials emphasized that centralized access to geospatial information can significantly improve response times, coordination, and situational awareness during crises.

Beyond Emergencies: Long-Term Planning and Collaboration

In addition to disaster response, Geodata.gov supports:

  • Transportation and infrastructure planning
  • Environmental protection initiatives
  • Social services coordination
  • Regional and urban planning efforts

At its core, the platform is built around data-sharing partnerships between federal, state, and local governments.

What Version 2 Will Deliver

The updated Geodata.gov portal will introduce several key improvements:

  • A more intuitive user experience for non-technical users
  • Enhanced search tools that can be embedded into external portals
  • Greater interoperability to support data sharing across systems
  • Faster search performance and improved responsiveness
  • Online management of 17 featured subject channels, showcasing innovative web services and thematic data collections

Continuing ESRI’s Role

ESRI, a global leader in GIS and geospatial software, also served as the primary contractor for the original version of Geodata.gov. Their continued involvement ensures technical continuity while enabling modernization based on current standards and user expectations.
