Observera releases Genie Pro™ 2.0 Automated Feature Extraction and Search Tool
May 15, 2008

Company: Observera, Inc.
Location: Channtilly, VA, United States of America

Chantilly, VA – May 14, 2008. Observera, Inc. is pleased to announce the debut of Genie Pro™ 2.0, the first commercial release of advanced technology licensed from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Previously released as a “Government-off-the-shelf” (GOTS) product, Genie Pro™ uses advanced Machine Learning concepts to perform automated feature extraction (AFE) and search. Genie Pro™ uses several state-of-the-art algorithms for discovering complex spatial-spectral signatures, including Evolutionary Algorithms, Support Vector Machines, and Decision Tree Grafting. Genie Pro™ can be used in a number of applications, such as automated feature detection, broad area search, land cover/land use classification and other types of automated or semi-automated image analysis.

Observera obtained a master license for the Genie Pro™ technology in late 2007 from LANL and has been working diligently to generate the first commercial product from it. Todd Jamison, CEO of Observera, said that the company’s long history with the LANL organization and the technology behind Genie Pro makes this particularly gratifying. “We have experienced the value of Genie Pro first-hand and believe that it is a milestone application of Machine Learning concepts. We are striving to improve the experience of Genie Pro users, and our goal is to make it the easiest to use and most accurate tool in its class.” Observera’s release of this software marks the beginning of a line of new geospatial products under its license. Near term future releases will include a scriptable interface for enterprise integration, and plug-in support for one or more major geospatial packages.

Users of the earlier GOTS versions of Genie and Genie Pro™ will recognize the easy to use training tools and user interface, but will also notice increased performance, significant improvements in stability, better layout of tools and dialog boxes, an extensive help and tutorial system, improved data handling, and improved vector export capabilities. Also, Genie Pro™ is being released on Mac OS X for the first time, in addition to a Windows version. Commercial product pricing is $1,500 per license, with generous discounts for volume, US Government, and Academic customers.

About Genie Pro -
Genie Pro™ 2.0 is a standalone application that can be used to search geospatial imagery, classify remotely sensed data and discover hard to find features within complex geospatial scenes. The software uses techniques from statistical machine learning theory and evolutionary computation theory – also known as genetic programming – to perform robust and customized AFE in multispectral, hyperspectral, panchromatic, and multi-instrument fused imagery. Genie Pro™ represents a significant technological advance over standard image classification algorithms in popular GIS and image processing packages. Genie Pro™ is able to distinguish between similar features that share similar spectral characteristics - for example, asphalt roads vs. asphalt roofs - by considering the combined spatial and spectral context of each pixel, which enables it to produce accurate map overlays for tasks that would defeat traditional spectral-only classification algorithms. These capabilities are particularly effective with today’s high-resolution airborne and satellite imagery. Unlike other tools on the marketplace Genie Pro™ has an easy-to-use interface that allows even the most novice user to learn to extract productive information with minimal training, while also offering the advanced imagery scientist the ability to manipulate a variety of processing options.
