Geospatial Information Systems a High Priority as State Officials Make Progress toward Statewide Coordination

 In May, Governor Schwarzenegger called for the creation of a task force to develop a statewide strategy to enhance Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) technology for environmental protection, natural resource management, traffic flow, emergency preparedness and response, land use planning and health and human services. GIS is a technology which utilizes geographic mapping that is layered with data, allowing users to navigate in an environment where they can visualize scenarios in unlimited new ways. This month, Governor Schwarzenegger also launched a GIS application aimed at helping parents, students and educators - www.schoolfinder.ca.gov. The website allows parents to easily find and compare schools side-by-side on data such as graduation rates and Academic Performance Index (API) scores, as well as information on student support services and advanced placement courses, in a one-stop easy-to-navigate Web site. State CIO Teri Takai earlier this month announced the members of the task force which has held four meetings so far and is currently working on initial recommendations to the Governor by August 15, 2008 and a final report by October 3, 2008. In June, more than 250 state officials participated in a forum focused on leveraging GIS to improve government services and better protect Californians. Held in Sacramento, the day-long forum included more than 20 exhibits of GIS applications.
