ConneXt Tellus Automated Plat Design Tool Supports Autodesk's AutoCAD Map and Microsoft Windows NT
February 10, 1999

Version 4.0 of Automated Plat Design Tool for Broader Appeal with Utility Distribution Companies

SEATTLE -- ConneXt, Inc., a leading Seattle-based developer of software solutions and services for the energy industry, today announced the expansion of its Tellus Automated Plat Design (APD) product with the addition of support in APD Version 4.0, for AutoCAD Map® and Microsoft® Windows NT®.APD also continues to support all of its prior GIS and platform environments.APD Version 4.0 is a natural evolution of prior versions of APD and shares patented underground design optimization technology and common user interface, while expanding its compatibility to support the market's leading CAD-based mapping system -- AutoCAD Map from Autodesk®.

Leveraging the strength, functionality and lower cost of ownership of the Microsoft® Windows NT® platform, Tellus APD allows gas and electric utilities to dramatically reduce underground residential design time while improving accuracy and ensuring designs to utility standards. In an independent case study of Tellus APD, utilities achieved immediate design service savings of $15,000 to $25,000 per 100-home subdivision construction project.

``Autodesk's AutoCAD Map, as a leading precision mapping and GIS analysis software package, is an obvious choice for this latest release of APD,'' said Del Wilson, Director and General Manager of the Tellus Product Line for ConneXt.``Supporting AutoCAD Map required porting APD to Microsoft's highly functional Windows NT platform. The net result is a substantial increase in the potential market size for our powerful design tool since many utilities are finding Windows NT to be their platform of choice, including many for whom AutoCAD Map is their cost effective GIS environment of choice.''

Joe Astroth, Autodesk Vice President, GIS said, ``ConneXt's new release of APD is exactly the type of integrated design application we envisioned for AutoCAD Map.APD with AutoCAD Map support delivers design engineers the most advanced, as well as familiar, solution for the distribution design market.''

Version 4.0 of APD has already been deployed at San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric Company, a regulated utility subsidiary of PG&E Corporation and one of the nation's largest investor-owned energy utilities, serving nearly 13 million people in a 70,000-square-mile service area of Northern and Central California.Pacific Gas and Electric Company is continuing its internal roll out of APD with completion scheduled by the end of June of 1999.

``The Engineers and Scientists Union of California, Local 20, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and ConneXt combined engineering expertise in a joint development project to expand APD into the AutoCAD Map environment,'' said Dirk Koops, Associate Distribution Engineer at PG&E.``Working together allowed comprehensive beta testing and direct feedback from designers in the field to guide development. Our senior management recognizes how this cooperative approach with ConneXt delivers the right tool to help us stay competitive in the distribution design market.''

About Tellus ConneXt's Tellus suite has the flexibility to operate from a single, dynamic database, enabling accurate, real-time information for GIS mapping and daily business operations. The Tellus products can also be individually integrated with existing legacy systems.

The Tellus suite spans:

  • Tellus AM/FM/GIS that provides instant access to updated asset and facilities information displayed in enterprise-wide dynamic map views. It includes Administrator, Librarian, Editor, Designer, and Publisher functions.
  • Tellus OMS, an outage management system that utilizes centralized data storage to improve crucial energy services, including the coordination of call centers, work crews and dispatchers during power outages.
  • Tellus APD, an innovative underground residential gas and electric automated plat design package based on patented fuzzy logic technology, which dramatically reduces design time while improving accuracy.Available for Microsoft® Windows NT® and UNIX® platforms, it includes APD Set-up and Plat Importer components.Cartographic Interpreter serves as an optional addition.
