Rocket City Geospatial Conference Sets Final Agenda and Exhibition

Two Keynoters, Two Guest Speakers and over Fifty Technical Presentations in Twenty Sessions plus Five Workshops Complete This Year’s Event Huntsville, AL – The 2008 Rocket City Geospatial Conference will be held November 18-20 at the Huntsville Marriott, and will focus on geographic information system (GIS) and location-based services (LBS) applications developed by organizations from northern Alabama and surrounding regions. Two keynote addresses will be offered. On Wednesday, November 19th at 9:00 a.m., Jack Dangermond, president of Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) and recognized worldwide as a visionary and leader in geographic information systems (GIS) technology, will deliver a comprehensive overview of how this technology has benefited both government and business. His address will correspond with GIS Day, an event that promotes awareness of geospatial technology and that Dangermond helped to start. GIS Day is now supported by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and ESRI. On Thursday, November 20th at 9:15 a.m., Mark Doherty, the executive director for Intergraph Corporation’s Security, Government & Infrastructure division, will address the audience on “The Changing Face of Geospatial” and how the influence of social networks, commercial GIS, cloud computing and three dimensional display and analysis are leading to greater utilization of location-based information and technology. Intergraph is also the Diamond Sponsor for this year’s conference. In addition, two guest speakers will deliver special addresses to the attendees. Brian Hilson, president and CEO of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, will welcome the attendees to the conference at 8:30 a.m. on November 19th. Bob Baron, president and CEO of Baron Services and named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce for 2007, will discuss his company’s use of geospatial technology in weather forecasting on November 20th at 8:30 a.m. A special opening plenary session on Disaster Management and Emergency Response will be conducted by conference chairman Joe Francica of Directions Media, the conference’s host organization. Other break out sessions will explore the use of geospatial information for applications in transportation, local and state government, utilities, military and intelligence, and the environment plus technical sessions on developing Internet mapping portals and spatial data management. “Especially in these uncertain economic times, geospatial technology and information can help reduce costs and provide for the effective management of government assets and infrastructure,” said Joe Francica, Directions Media’s vice publisher and the conference chairman.
