Farallon Geographics Implements Enterprise GIS for Town of Woodside and Integrates It with StreetSaver Pavement Management System (PMS)
April 09, 2009

Company: Farallon Geographics, Inc.
Industry: Local Government
Location: San Francisco, CA, United States of America

San Francisco, CA-- Farallon Geographics (http://www.fargeo.com) built and deployed an enterprise GIS for the Town of Woodside, CA, and linked the GIS to the Town’s MTC StreetSaver Pavement Management System (PMS) as well as to its CRW Permit Management System (CRW). With the integrated solution, Town staff could quickly map StreetSaver information into the GIS to perform spatial analysis or use a map as an interface for managing property assets and notifications.

For the Town GIS, Farallon configured a geodatabase using ESRI’s ArcView, augmenting county information by using Town data to develop specific map data layers such as zoning and geologic hazard data. Using ArcView allows the City to leverage the core capabilities of an ESRI geodatabase without incurring the cost overhead associated with a full ArcGIS Server deployment.

For pavement management, the Town had access to MTC’s StreetSaver Online Pavement Management System. The application can track and analyze the condition of road networks and print out reports that help define and adjust maintenance treatments and budgets. However because of the complexity of these tabular reports, the Town continued to rely primarily on visual observations and resident complaints to determine which pavement to schedule for repair. They needed a visual PMS.

“We recognized that if we could present the tabular PMS results in a more intuitive and familiar format, like a map, we could more easily make use of StreetSaver’s capabilities.” said Eunejune Kim, Deputy Town Engineer, “This would allow both managers and technicians to see where maintenance efficiencies might be gained”.

Farallon developed a solution to import StreetSaver information to the Town’s GIS. For visual display, GIS street data is dynamically segmented into paving sections using the StreetSaver database at the time the user requests the information. Town staff can now perform spatial analysis and StreetSaver queries, allowing them to quickly create maps showing the extent of distressed streets and proposed pavement treatments.

For the Town’s CRW Community Management System, by integrating the GIS with CRW, CRW became the GIS map interface allowing all CRW users, including City Planners and Engineers, the ability to view and query the GIS. This provides them with current land information at their fingertips rather than having to dig through large volumes of paper records. For example, a Town Planner can view which permits have been issued within a specified distance from subject site to assist with a permitting decision.
