Spacemetric wins contract for development of ESA's Multi-Mission Catalogue to Web Map Server Bridge
July 07, 2003

Company: Spacemetric
Industry: Remote Sensing & Image Processing

Stockholm, Sweden -- Spacemetric announced today that it has signed a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) that will use its expertise in advanced satellite image geocoding to the full. The ESA contract is to develop innovative middleware to bridge the gap between the Multi-Mission Catalogue (MUIS) for Earth observation satellite imagery and the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) Web Map Server (WMS) interface standard. The contract was won amid stiff commercial competition from fifteen suppliers and Spacemetric's solution was selected on its technical merits.

The ESA contract involves developing a WMS interface to the ESA Multi-Mission Catalogue housed at ESRIN in Frascati, Italy. The development includes functions for rigorous geometric correction of satellite imagery and making them available according to the OGC WMS interface. This will allow users of the MUIS catalogue to display accurately geocoded browse images on a Web browser. In addition, these can be co-located with diverse geographical information, such as roads and lakes, coastlines and oil slicks provided by other servers supporting OGC WMS.

The geocoding functions will support both optical and radar imagery from a wide range of sensors and platforms. The priority is to provide geocoded browse products from ESA satellite missions. This includes Envisat ASAR, MERIS and AATSR, plus the ERS satellites. However, a large number of third-party imagery acquired by ESA stations will also be supported including Landsat TM, NOAA AVHRR, SeaWifs and Terra MODIS.

Spacemetric is based in Stockholm, Sweden and provides systems and consulting for satellite image production. While the company is not old, one of its founders, Dr Torbjörn Westin, has a worldwide reputation and long-standing expertise in rigorous satellite image geocoding.Spacemetric's satellite orthoimage production system is used by Metria in Sweden, the leading Nordic and a major European supplier of satellite image products.Spacemetric's consulting work includes expert support to ESA on product validation.

The development will be carried out with SaabTech of Järfälla, Sweden as a subcontractor to Spacemetric.SaabTech is a leading supplier of avionics, electronic warfare and command and control systems.SaabTech will be responsible for the OGC WMS server in the project.
ESA ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, is the European Space Agency establishment responsible for management and development of the ESA Earth observation satellite ground segment. The MUIS Catalogue is the gateway to EO data acquired over many years by ESA ground facilities. The contract will make the contents of the Multi-Mission Catalogue more accessible and valuable for users.
