How has your usage of Google Maps changed since Google changed its data source from a well-known vendor to itself?
I use it the same way as before.
I use it about the same, but now I report errors.
I use it less.
I use it more.

Backpacker Teams with Google Earth
June 06, 2008

Company: BACKPACKER magazine
Industry: Journalism / Publishing, Internet/Web Mapping/Web Services
Location: Boulder, CO, United States of America

Instead of querying professional photographers for its June cover image, BACKPACKER magazine called up the map experts at Google Earth to create the magazine's first ever digital map cover. The 3-D map image depicts a hiking route near Going-to-the-Sun Mountain in Glacier National Park, and illustrates the stellar detail of the today's digital maps. The June 2008 issue is on newsstands now.

The 3-D map is a fitting lead into one of the issue's features, iHike -- a complete guide on how to plan, document, organize, and share digital information. The package advises readers on map software and digital tools, and includes step-by-step skills on how to use GPS tools, digital cameras, and video software to show off adventures with friends and family.

"We are using more and more technology every day to plan, execute, and share our outdoor adventures," said BACKPACKER editor-in-chief Jonathan Dorn. "In our June issue, we take a hard look at what digital tools are available for hikers, and how they can make backcountry trips safer and more enjoyable. The iHike package provides our readers with everything they need to know to scout and create routes in 3D using a GPS and Google Earth, plus tips for taking video, posting photos, and more."

The eight-page package shows readers how to create their own trail maps, what software to manage their digital files, and more than 10 ways to share their outdoor stories-from creating a DVD to geo-tagging photos on photo-sharing sites.

"Among outdoor publications and websites, Backpacker is recognized as the leader in providing detailed, innovative maps to its readers," said Dorn. "The quality of Google's images--from the topography contours to the rich colors to the fine detail in the rock and snow--made our June cover an amazingly realistic representation of the mountain we selected."

The issue also highlights the new destination pages on backpacker.com, where readers can submit digital trips with turn-by-turn GPS directions, photos, and video clips. They can see their trips on Google maps and in Google Earth. Readers can enter a contest to win a $4,000 electronic package and a free trip with BACKPACKER editors in the Colorado Rockies.
