How has your usage of Google Maps changed since Google changed its data source from a well-known vendor to itself?
I use it the same way as before.
I use it about the same, but now I report errors.
I use it less.
I use it more.

Vehicle Tracking by Data Nets and MapData Sciences protects PNG’s fuel
October 27, 2009

Company: MapData Sciences Pty Ltd
Industry: Geographic Data, GPS
Location: Sydney, Australia

MapData Sciences Pty Ltd (MDS) and Data Nets Limited have partnered to provide current digital mapping and live fleet tracking services in Papua New Guinea (PNG). One of the first applications of the service is to protect the fuel tankers and their cargo for a major energy provider in the region, by allowing them to utilise GPS tracking devices and real time monitoring of the vehicles.

The challenge in PNG was that the digital network of roads was not as current or accessible as in other countries. This provided an opportunity and a significant differentiating point for Data Nets. Data Nets and MDS built the digital road network and were therefore able to implement the MDS Fleet Tracking service. With the combined expertise, Data Nets is able to offer real time monitoring of a vehicle’s location on up-to-date maps, alerting owners when a vehicle travels “out of bounds” or is driven outside of predefined hours. In addition to its visual component and the alerts, Data Nets’ customers are provided with a “my fleet” login to monitor their fleets and access customised reports.

The relationship between MDS and Data Nets provides organisations with a truly state of the art asset protection and employee safety service, using “best of breed” technology and an irresistible cost/benefit ratio. The system also enables Data Nets to continue to upgrade the maps, to be flexible in their approach to the business and to be able to respond to the special needs of customers, such as remote mining sites and trucking firms where new and private roads are being increasingly used.

Data Nets is the only specialist telecommunications systems integrator in the Pacific, specially covering Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

MapData Sciences has been developing and hosting online digital mapping applications for over 11 years as well as supplying mapping data to other online mapping providers and for in-house GIS development projects. In addition, MDS provides consulting, systems integration and route optimisation services.
