NGA Employees Make a Difference
November 10, 2009

Company: National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency
Industry: Military/Defense
Location: Bethesda, MD, United States of America

What makes the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) one of the top 50 great places to work in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area?

According to NGA Director Navy Vice Adm. Robert B. Murrett, “It’s the way that people treat each other and their sense of mission.”

Federal News Radio interviewed Murrett Nov. 6 for their “Federal Drive” program, providing him an opportunity to share what makes NGA special.

“We have a very strong focus on mission here at NGA, and I think that’s the very best for our people that they can see visible evidence every day of what a difference they are making in terms of security of the nation,” said Murrett.

Asked about employee feedback, Murrett cited the annual Employee Climate Survey for providing the opportunity for “listening to our people” and “acting on the messages that they’re sending out.”

Collaboration is another agency strong point, and it provides an opportunity to learn from counterpart organizations. “We try to borrow best practices from all of them, and I think the engagement that we have across the interagency is absolutely essential and we all try to learn from each other,” said Murrett.

NGA’s investing in training and education also provides an opportunity for geographically dispersed employees to see people they might not normally work with. “We bring folks together from all of our locations for those key elements of career development. And I think that’s a major plus-up in terms of interaction and also raising morale for our people.”

Washingtonian magazine selected NGA as one of five government agencies identified by employees as places in the Washington, D.C., area where the "pay, mission, culture, flexibility and benefits were the best part of working at their agency."

NGA is a Department of Defense combat support agency and a member of the national Intelligence Community. The agency’s mission is to provide geospatial intelligence (GEOINT), which is the exploitation of satellite or airborne images, fused with other intelligence and geospatial information such as mapping, charting and geodesy to help warfighters and national decision makers visualize what they need to know. NGA is the nation’s eyes.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., NGA also has major facilities in the Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and St. Louis, Mo., areas with NGA support teams worldwide. Visit our Web site at www.nga.mil.
