AutoGrid Expands Energy Data Platform with New Applications for Utilities, Retail Electricity Providers and Large Electricity Users

Energy industry’s first Big Data analytics and predictive control platform now open for third party application developers.

AutoGrid Systems, a leader in Big Data analytics and cloud computing solutions for the energy industry, unveiled multiple new applications under a major strategic initiative at DistribuTECH that will expand the scope, reach and versatility of its Energy Data Platform (EDP).

With this announcement, AutoGrid will open its groundbreaking Big Data analytics and predictive control platform to partners and third party application developers.  By leveraging EDP’s scale, security and cloud-based architecture, developers will be able to dramatically reduce the time-to-market and cost of developing and deploying new applications and services to optimize the energy supply chain.  

Some of the early application partners and projects for EDP include:

  • NTT DATA. NTT DATAand AutoGrid have jointly developed Energy Cost Optimizer (ECO), an application that allows large commercial and industrial users to manage peak power consumption and reduce demand charges by analyzing current consumption, usage patterns, production runs and other data streams. ECO addresses demand charges, which can account for 30 percent or more of the utility bill of a commercial or industrial facility.  
  • AppOrchid.AppOrchid and AutoGrid are developing intelligent enterprise apps for tablets, phones and other form factors to convey critical insights like real-time wind or solar generation, consumption and demand response resources in a visually compelling and actionable way.
  • Big Data Energy Services. BDES and AutoGrid have developed applications that provide dynamic forecasts of power consumption to utilities, electricity retailers and others so they can reduce peak power purchases, which can cost $5,000 per megawatt-hour during hot summer days in Texas. The applications are specifically targeted towards retail electricity providers in highly competitive deregulated retail markets to help them manage the cost and risk of operations, increase the total life time value of customers and reduce customer churn.

Big Data analytics and cloud-based applications that can harness the vast amounts of data being generated by intelligent devices will play an instrumental role in solving the urgent need for improving utility operations. Smart Grid is already generating more than 70 percent of all data at many utilities. By 2020, smart meters will be generating more than 8,200 petabytes of data a year. The coming wave of Internet of Things (IoT) devices will create tremendous new opportunities for energy users and utilities to more productively use energy and lower costs.

Based on open standards such as OpenADR 2.0 b, Smart Energy Profile 2.0 and an extensive library of interfaces to existing AMI systems, behind-the-meter devices, building management systems, grid sensors and weather services, EDP is able to bring data together from more than 100 different types of devices and applications on the market today and process it in real-time.  EDP’s highly scalable and secure architecture analyzes the complex interrelationships within the energy supply chain using petabytes of structured and unstructured data coming from millions of sensors generating hundreds of billions of data points per day. The forecasts generated by EDP create a comprehensive portrait of grid activity that let generators, utilities, energy service providers and electricity users to manage power distribution and consumption in a precise, secure manner.

AutoGrid’s Demand Response Optimization and Management System (DROMS), a demand response management application based on EDP, costs 90 percent less to implement than conventional demand response management systems, supports the entire spectrum of behavioral and automated demand response programs in a unified manner, and yields up to 30 percent more power per demand response event by utilizing EDP’s advanced forecasting and customer analytics capabilities. The company’s breakthrough technology enjoys significant momentum in the marketplace with several significant customer wins:

 

  • City of Palo Alto Utilities implemented a demand response program for commercial customers using DROMS in under 30 days where ordinary demand response systems would have taken months. The program saves an average of 1.2 megawatts per event.
  • Austin Energy created a “Bring Your Own Technology” demand response program with DROMS that linked into thermostats consumers bought at retail. The system has cut HVAC loads by up to 33 percent in subject homes. Electric vehicle drivers also can link into the program so drivers can make money by delaying charging.
  • Silver Spring Networks, a leader in smart grid technologies, is utilizing EDP within their UtilityIQ Demand Optimizer product.
  • Oklahoma Gas and Electric employs EDP in one of the world’s largest two-way communicating thermostat-based residential demand response programs reaching more than 70,000 customers.
  • Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management, is using EDP and DROMS to provide demand response functionality within the Wiser home management system.
