Cityworks on BlackBerry, Android and iPhone

Freeance™ and Cityworks® Azteca Systems, Inc. Embrace Strategic Development Partnership

TDC Group, Inc. (TDC), developers of Freeance Mobile software, announces development of a mobile solution for Cityworks to run on BlackBerry, iPhone and Android smartphones. The Freeance Mobile for Cityworks application will allow field workers to create and record work orders, service orders and inspections directly to the Cityworks server. Consistent with the GIS-centric design of Cityworks’ work orders and service orders, the Freeance Mobile solution will link records to ESRI’s ArcGIS map features within Cityworks, enabling mobile workers fast, easy access to vital information in the field on a platform already in hand.

"Cityworks has a comprehensive approach for supporting the mobile needs of our customers including web services that expose core functionality useful for supporting devices such as smartphones," states Brian Haslam, President of Cityworks | Azteca Systems. "TDC Group is a recognized leader and innovator of smartphone applications. We are pleased to announce a strategic development partnership with TDC Group to provide Cityworks designed and optimized for smartphone use."

"We are thrilled by our new partnership with Cityworks, said Matthew Reddington, CEO of TDC. This partnership enables TDC and Azteca Systems to combine our strengths and deliver a new set of mobile tools that save considerable time in daily field operations and drive down labor costs for our customers. With their large mobile workforces, our customers can achieve new efficiencies using the Freeance for Cityworks solution. Work orders, service orders and inspections can be created in the field on inexpensive smartphones and sent back to Cityworks Server in real time where they are connected with Esri’s GIS."

The Freeance Mobile for Cityworks solution will debut at the Cityworks User Conference May 16-18, 2011 in St. George, UT.

Towards a Global Licensing Framework for Geospatial Data

Is it time for a global licensing framework for geospatial data? The GSDI Legal and Economic Working group thinks so and offered a presentation and a way forward at the GSDI 13 conference held in Quebec City in May. The effort aims to harmonize existing licensing without changing fundamental access policies and funding models and be compatible with the diferences in national legal systems. That's a tall order, but an important one as the world moves toward geodata sharing. Geoff Zeiss reports.
