Esri Human Health and Climate Change App Challenge
Coastal People Watch claims 2nd Place
Charleston, SC September 18, 2015: Emma Paz, a GIS Developer at ROK Technologies was very excited when she learned about the Esri Human Health and Climate App Challenge. The app challenge was sponsored by Esri in response to President Obama’s Climate Action Plan: strengthen the country’s resilience to the health impacts of climate change. Understanding the geography of climate change is critical to mitigating its health effects and creating a vibrant and sustainable future. The app challenge opened June 1st and closed August 14th.
Ms. Paz gathered the ROK team and came up with Coastal People Watch, which allows users to visualize the effects of rising sea levels on the coastal community. Coastal People Watch is a tool to help officials and public citizens alike anticipate sea level rise potential effects and plan effectively. This means having accurate estimates of the number of people and homes that may be affected as waters inundate our streets, as well as where to go for help by mapping the local Critical Facilities and Evacuation Routes in our area, all in lieu of the various available NOAA SLR scenarios.
During Esri’s Health and Human Services Conference in Atlanta, GA on September 15, Dr. Este Geraghty, Esri’s Health and Human Service Sector Manager, announced this year’s winners:
· 1st Place – Heat and Social Inequality in the US
· 2nd Place - Coastal People Watch
· 3rd Place – Sea Level Rise and its Impact
