Making Interactive Maps Available To BlackBerry Users on the Move

ESRI UK becomes exclusive UK distributor for TDC’s Freeance Mobile Software

Sept 23, 2010 - Aylesbury, UK - BlackBerry smartphone users will soon be able to view and edit map and location data on the move as ESRI UK becomes the official, exclusive distributor for TDC’s Freeance™ Mobile Software in the UK.

The application allows public and private sector organisations already using BlackBerry smartphones to maximise their investment in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), opening up live dynamic maps, data collection and location services to their staff.

Richard Waite, Managing Director of leading GIS provider, ESRI UK, said, “We are pleased to announce that ESRI UK is becoming the official distributor of Freeance Mobile Software in the UK. With the UK having an ever increasing mobile workforce, we are committed to providing software which is in-line with technological advancements and the demands of our customers. This will further fulfil our mission to make GIS technology an indispensible part of everyday life.”

Freeance software allows any organisation running ESRI's flagship ArcGIS Server to publish their maps live to an unlimited number of BlackBerry smartphones. This is another opportunity for public sector customers to realise efficiency savings, delivering more for less from their IT investment.  This is achieved, for example, through staff not needing to return to the office to access or record collected information. Freeance delivers the means to solve this for public sector field workers collecting information on anything from potholes, street furniture and graffiti to emergency response data like flooding extents, emergency planning surveys, intelligence or crime related information.

“By uniting the strengths of both companies, this partnership adds new value to GIS in government, utilities, public safety and other enterprises within the UK,” said Matthew Reddington, CEO of TDC Group, Inc. “Using Freeance Mobile software, customers now can leverage all the benefits mobile GIS has to offer such as increased efficiencies, dramatic cost savings and better customer service. We are excited to work with a firm as capable as ESRI UK to implement and support our innovative Freeance Mobile software for customers in the UK.”

The advantages to businesses are also clear, in leveraging more value from investments in BlackBerry Smartphone and GIS; allowing employees to collect and view key information in the context of a map and their location, wherever they are.

Towards a Global Licensing Framework for Geospatial Data

Is it time for a global licensing framework for geospatial data? The GSDI Legal and Economic Working group thinks so and offered a presentation and a way forward at the GSDI 13 conference held in Quebec City in May. The effort aims to harmonize existing licensing without changing fundamental access policies and funding models and be compatible with the diferences in national legal systems. That's a tall order, but an important one as the world moves toward geodata sharing. Geoff Zeiss reports.
